    15. Obituary of David J. Kallen, Ph.D.
      David J. Kallen, Ph.D. David Johnson Kallen, born July 21, 1929, died at home in Grand Ledge on April 20, 2009, at the age of 79. A sociologist, Kallen was a professor at MSU's Department of Pediatrics and Human Development for more than 30 years. As a proponent of clinical sociology, he found real-world uses for knowledge and research. He was a founding member of the Commission on Applied and Clinical Sociology, president of the Sociological Practice Association, editor of several professional journals and author of numerous publications. He received the Robert Ezra Park Award for Distinguished Contributions to Sociological Practice and the Distinguished Career Award for the Practice of Sociology from the American Sociological Association. Kallen was born in Danbury, Connecticut, and raised in New York City. His father was Horace Meyer Kallen, a philosopher scholar who helped found the New School for Social Research and coined the term "cultural pluralism." His paternal lineage included seven generations of rabbis. His maternal grandfather, Johnson Oatman, a protestant minister, authored the well-known hymns "Higher Ground" and "Count Your Blessings." David Kallen graduated from Cornell University in 1951 and received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, where he began his lifelong study of how people make decisions. Before being recruited by the developing medical school at MSU, he did research on child development and problems surrounding malnutrition for the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. Kallen did wide-ranging research in an attempt to learn how to help people live better lives. As Assistant Director and Coordinator for Behavioral Science and Evaluation at MSU's Pediatric Residency Program, he taught doctors how to achieve better relationships with their patients. As a teacher and mentor, he helped many students attain higher degrees. In 1999, he received the outstanding Faculty Award from MSU's College of Human Medicine. A skilled photographer, Kallen displayed his work at Ledge Craft Lane in downtown Grand Ledge. He was an enthusiastic music fan, and a voracious reader of both academic works and modern literature. Over the past eight years, he showed great courage and was determined to live a happy, productive life despite numerous and extended interventions for cancer. He asked that his appreciation for all his care be mentioned. He is survived by Sandy, his wife of 16 years; sons, Hugh (Kathleen) of Kalamazoo and Ben Kallen of Los Angeles; daughter, Nina (Adam) of Boston; stepdaughters, Julie (Mark) Donley of Higgins Lake and Laurie (Tod) Schmiedeknecht of Potterville; 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; and 2 brothers-in-law, Thomas (Lynn) Ames of Cicero, NY and Robert Ames of San Diego. He was predeceased by his sisters, Harriet Haines and Wilma Walker, and stepson Mark Howard Greenwood. Memorial services will be held Friday, April 24, 2009, 11:00 a.m. at the Trinity Episcopal Church, 201 E. Jefferson St., Grand Ledge, with the Rev. J. Nixon McMillan and Rabbi Michael Zimmerman co-officiating.
