    • [Translation by Miles Rind of typewritten letter in German:]
      Zagreb, 27 August 1949

      Dear Martin,

We are delighted to hear that you have decided to marry. Even if it is not possible for us to attend your wedding in person, we are there in spirit. We sincerely wish that in marriage you find the happiness that you expect and that alongside your bride you will enjoy a carefree and joyful life.

I should like, dear nephew, to give you a present. But it is impossible to send it now. It is according to your preference either a beautiful picture or a Persian rug. It has been set aside for you. Until the times have calmed down a bit, you will have to extend your honeymoon trip and come to Europe to fetch it yourself.

Once again, all the best for the future and sincere regards to you and your wife

      from your uncle

      [handwritten] Berthold

[PS] Hopefully, you will understand this letter.

      [handwritten] with Aunt Gretl
