My brother met a friend in New York, and he and brother left for Syracuse, N.Y. The friends name was Jacob Levinson. . . . They were taken for father and son, so my brother changed his name from Sam Smolinski, our family name, to Levinson, and all the rest of our family, from then on, go by the name of Levinson." /

Dating is off by at least four years, since son Isaac was born in Syracuse in 1872.
